Deleting Buckets
Deleting a bucket permanently removes it. Because deletion is irreversible, it is important to understand the requirements below before you proceed.
When a bucket can be deleted
A bucket can be deleted only when all of the following are true:
- The bucket is empty — it contains no objects and no object versions.
- The bucket is not actively shared — it has no active bucket shares.
- The bucket is active — it exists and is not already in the process of being deleted.
Delete a bucket in the Portal
The Delete action is available only when the bucket meets all the requirements above. If a bucket cannot be deleted, the Portal shows why so you can resolve it first.
Delete a bucket via the API
You can delete a bucket programmatically with the Portal API. See the Delete bucket reference for the full request and error details.
The name stays reserved
A bucket name remains reserved by its original owner even after the bucket is deleted. You cannot create another bucket with the same name.
Bucket names are unique within the platform, and this uniqueness is enforced against every bucket that has ever been created — not only the ones that are currently active. After you delete a bucket, its name is permanently tied to the tenant that originally created it and cannot be reused. For more on valid bucket names, see limitations and quotas.
